AI Marketing Agency: What It Means and What to Check
An executive search firm we worked with wanted to know when companies in their target sectors merged, were bought, or lost a senior person, because those are the moments that tend to create a vacancy worth calling about.
We built a weekly briefing that runs the searches and writes it up. It does not send anything. It drops into a drafts folder, and a person reads it and presses send.
That is roughly what an AI marketing agency means in practice. Not a business that has put the word "AI" on its homepage this year, but one that has actually built AI into how it researches, writes or reports on your marketing, with a person still checking what goes out the door.
The trouble is almost every agency now uses the label, and they mean very different things by it. Some mean a content team using ChatGPT to draft blog posts faster. Some mean real automation running reports or research without someone touching it daily. Some mean nothing much beyond the line on the website. If you are trying to work out what you are actually buying, or whether to call yourself one, this is for that question.
What an AI marketing agency actually does, day to day
Strip away the branding and most of this work falls into three buckets.
The first is content. Drafting blog posts, ad copy, social captions and emails faster than a human writing from scratch. This is the use case we see most often, and it is where the gap between agencies is widest. Some produce decent first drafts a copywriter then shapes. Others publish the raw output with nobody reading it properly first.
The second is research and targeting. Pulling audience data, competitor activity or keyword patterns together faster than someone doing it by hand across a dozen browser tabs.
The third is reporting. Pulling spend, conversions and campaign performance from several platforms into one view, instead of a person copying numbers into a spreadsheet every Monday morning.
None of these three replace the judgement call of whether a campaign is actually working for your business. They replace the typing that sits around that judgement call. To be clear about our own position, Altrincham AI builds the automation and reporting pieces behind marketing work, the briefing, the dashboard, the data plumbing, rather than running a creative or media buying service ourselves.
AI marketing agency against marketing automation agency
These two terms get used as if they mean the same thing and they do not, quite.
A marketing automation agency, which is what we have written about separately on marketing automation consultant, is usually about the plumbing. Email sequences that fire when someone fills a form. Leads routed to the right person. CRM fields filled in without someone typing them twice. That work existed before generative AI, and AI has made it faster to build, not invented it from scratch.
An AI marketing agency, as the phrase is used now, leans more towards the creative and analytical side. Writing, research, image generation, reporting. It overlaps with automation but it is not the same job, and it is worth asking a prospective agency directly which half you are actually buying.
Is an AI SEO digital marketing agency a different thing again?
Mostly it is the same idea with a narrower focus. An AI SEO digital marketing agency applies the same tools, content drafting, keyword research, competitor analysis, specifically to organic search rather than paid media or social.
AI is genuinely useful for drafting content and for surfacing keyword patterns faster than a person reading reports one at a time. What it does not do is decide whether the content is any good, or whether it says something a reader would trust. That part still needs a person who knows the subject, the same way it always did.
Why most of what you are buying is still shallow
This is the part worth being blunt about. The Office for National Statistics found that adopting UK businesses use an average of 1.6 AI technologies, and only 10% describe their use as extensive. The gap is not usually whether a business has tried AI at all. It is whether anyone has gone past the obvious first use.
That applies to agencies as much as to the businesses hiring them. A team using one AI tool for first drafts and calling it an AI marketing offering is one thing. A team that has rebuilt its research, targeting and reporting process around it is another, and it is worth asking which one you are talking to.
The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's adoption research found the biggest barrier to deeper AI use is not cost or fear. It is that 71% of businesses had not identified a clear business need, and 60% cited limited skills. That is as true inside marketing agencies as it is inside the businesses that hire them.
Drawing the line, deliberately
Going back to that weekly briefing. The drafts folder was not a limitation we were working around. It was a decision.
The tools will do the research and the writing. Deciding whether a message is right to send, to a real person, about something that might matter to them, is not something we wanted to hand over. If an agency pitches you a pipeline that sends on its own with nobody checking it, ask them to show you exactly how that works before you sign anything.
What it costs, and how to buy it sensibly for marketing work
We sell our own work project by project rather than as one large transformation number, because a big figure with no detail attached tends to get deferred rather than started. Projects start from £500, and we price each piece of work separately.
The same approach works when you are the one buying marketing AI specifically. Ask for a content process rebuilt around AI drafting with a proper human edit stage, priced on its own. Ask for a reporting dashboard that pulls the handful of numbers you actually look at, priced separately again. Agree upfront who is responsible for editorial sign off and who is accountable if something published is wrong. Get one piece working and judge it before buying the rest.
If you are based around Manchester, Trafford or Cheshire and weighing up an AI agency Manchester businesses actually use, the same questions apply locally as they do nationally. See AI Consultancy Manchester for how we work with firms in the area.
When not to hire one
If your current marketing problem is that nobody has agreed what success looks like, an AI marketing agency will not fix that. It will produce faster content and tidier reports about a campaign that was never pointed at the right goal to begin with.
And if the pitch includes a promise that content will be published with nobody reading it first, that is not efficiency. That is a business letting a model speak to its customers unsupervised, and it is the kind of thing that goes wrong in a way that is hard to undo once it has gone out.
We have written more generally about buying automation work properly in How to buy from an AI automation agency without wasting your money. Both are worth reading alongside this if you are weighing up a first project rather than just a label.
